Congressman John F. Tierney today announced $10 million in federal funds to rebuild the north jetty of the Merrimack River in Salisbury. The funds resulted from last year's Disaster Relief Appropriations Act, which Congressman Tierney supported.

"This is great news for Salisbury residents, who have long been concerned about the deterioration of the Merrimack River's north jetty. For almost ten years, I have been aggressively working to secure and direct federal funds to address Newburyport, Newbury and Salisbury's flooding and erosion concerns. I am pleased that this $10 million to rebuild the north jetty follows the $5.5 million in federal assistance that was directed to repair the south jetty last year as well as more than $1 million in congressionally-directed appropriations to finance the dredging of the Merrimack River entrance channel. I want to thank the Army Corps of Engineers for its commitment to addressing the serious issues impacting these communities and voice my appreciation to the state and local officials for being tremendous partners in this effort," said Congressman John Tierney.

For nearly ten years, Tierney has been working on these issues and seizing every possible opportunity to secure and direct federal funds to address Newburyport, Newbury and Salisbury's flooding and erosion concerns. Tierney secured over $1 million in congressionally-directed appropriations to dredge the Merrimack River entrance channel as well as nearly $100,000 to begin Plum Island's south jetty project. Additionally, Congressman Tierney has been working closely with Army Corps officials and pressing for federal funds to be directed toward completing the south jetty and north jetty projects. Two years ago, $3.5 million in federal assistance was directed to Plum Island's south jetty project; and, last year, an additional $5.5 million in federal funds was awarded to complete it. The $10 million in federal funding for Salisbury's north jetty project is anticipated to be sufficient to initiate and potentially complete work on it.
